Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test Cricket

On May 12, 2025, Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket, marking the end of a remarkable 14-year career in the longest format of the game. The 36-year-old made the announcement ahead of India’s five-match Test series against England, which begins on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. He shared the news through a statement on his Instagram account.

A Glorious Test Career

Kohli’s Test career began in 2011, and over the years, he established himself as one of India’s most prolific batsmen. He amassed 9,230 runs in 113 Tests at an average of 46.8, making him India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in Tests, behind Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Rahul Dravid (13,265), and Sunil Gavaskar (10,122).

As captain, Kohli led India in 68 Tests, securing 40 victories, making him the most successful Test captain in Indian cricket history. Under his leadership, India achieved notable successes, including a historic series win in Australia in 2018-19 and reaching the finals of the World Test Championship in 2021 and 2023.

The Decision to Retire

Kohli’s decision to retire comes shortly after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket, signaling a significant transition period for Indian cricket. Reports suggest that Kohli had been contemplating retirement since December 2024 and had communicated his intentions to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ahead of the upcoming England tour.

While the BCCI reportedly urged him to reconsider, Kohli remained firm in his decision. Some reports indicate that the BCCI did not request him to stay, suggesting that he no longer fit into the team’s Test plans due to a dip in form.

Legacy and Impact

Kohli’s retirement marks the end of an era in Indian cricket. Known for his aggressive batting style and passionate leadership, he played a pivotal role in transforming the Indian Test team into a formidable force, especially in overseas conditions. His commitment to fitness and professionalism set new standards for his teammates and aspiring cricketers.

Beyond his on-field achievements, Kohli’s influence extended off the field. With over 270 million followers on Instagram, he is one of the most followed athletes globally, reflecting his immense popularity and impact on the sport.

Looking Ahead

As Indian cricket prepares for the upcoming series against England, the team faces the challenge of filling the void left by two of its stalwarts. The retirements of Kohli and Sharma present an opportunity for emerging talents to step up and continue the legacy.

Kohli’s departure from Test cricket is not just the end of a personal journey but a significant moment in the history of Indian cricket. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the game, inspiring countless fans and future cricketers.

As fans bid farewell to Kohli’s illustrious Test career, they celebrate the memories, the milestones, and the passion he brought to the game. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations to come.
